Transzonal projections (TZPs) are protrusions derived from the cytoplasm of cumulus cells, serving as unique dynamic connecting structures between mammalian cumulus cells and oocytes. As a key bridge for material transport and information exchange between cumulus cells and oocytes, TZPs play crucial roles in follicular development and oocyte maturation. TZPs support oocyte development by transporting metabolic substances such as pyruvic acid, mediate signal transduction to maintain meiotic arrest, and regulate granulosa cell differentiation to form a bidirectional communication network. The dynamic formation and function of TZPs are regulated by hormones, growth factors and other molecules, resulting in structural plasticity and functional diversity. This review summarizes the occurrence mechanism, structural heterogeneity and molecular regulatory network of TZPs, systematically analyzes the kinetic changes in TZPs and the regulatory principles of oocyte maturation mediated by TZPs, aiming to bridge the theoretical gap in communication between gonadal cells and germ cells, and provide a key theoretical basis for the optimization of the in vitro maturation system of oocytes and intervention strategies for ovarian dysfunction.
