The history of research on tamgas in the Kazakh steppe spans approximately two hundred and fifty years. The number of academic works on this topic is currently substantial. In fact, a sharp increase in interest in this type of historical data since the second half of the 20thcentury has led to the emergence of numerous individual researchers and research teams who have begun to explore various aspects of tamga usage among the peoples who inhabited the Eurasian steppes in ancient and medieval times. Scholars have conducted extensive work in collecting and analyzing tamgas discovered in Kazakhstan and neighboring regions, interpreting the concept of the tamga and determining the distribution range of specific types of tamgas. Research into the origin, internal meaning, and parallels of tamgas has also reached a certain level of development. However, due to a range of reasons (political, linguistic, etc.), researchers have often worked independently and in isolation, resulting in conflicting views and a lack of a unified methodology. This has not only increased the number of studies but also the amount of criticism directed at them. Therefore, it is now necessary to consolidate previously published works, draw interim conclusions, and systematize the findings in order to pave the way for new research.
