Toponymy (the science of place names), which is related to disciplines such as linguistics, history, and geography, has been a field of research to scientists for over a century. Toponymy research, which began in France in the 1900s, continued in Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Germany. Later, toponymic research was continued by the Slavic countries. Finnish and Hungarian scientists also addressed this issue. In Turkey, researchers such as Fuad Köprülü, Nihal Atsız, Mehmet Şakir first worked on toponyms (place names) too. Besides Russians, Soviet scientists of Turkic origin also wrote books on toponymy. In these works, Uyghur toponyms were included. Similarly, in some studies conducted in Turkey, toponyms in East Turkestan were examined. However, there is no research in Turkey that addresses the current situation of the toponymy here. Therefore, in our study, we examined the toponyms of East Turkestan region (Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region). The research material consists of toponyms based on literature review. The material obtained in the literature review includes examples of both old Turkish and contemporary Turkic languages such as Kazakh, Kyrgyz and Uyghur. In this study, we classified the toponyms in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in terms of structure, meaning and culture. In the research, apart from this basic classification, we briefly mentioned the formation of the first Turkic toponyms in the region as a result of old Turkish and Chinese historical relations. We also expressed the problems that arose when toponyms belonging to Turkic languages were converted into Chinese. Our research is important because it is a current situation study of the toponymy of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.
