Many universities bear the name of where they were established, which signifies the prevailing origins of modern higher education institutions, such as national or state initiatives. The motivation was to offer higher education opportunities to home students and, in prestigious colleges, to international students, particularly those from the colonies. In recent times, numerous colleges, particularly in developing nations, have emerged as extensions of institutions in the more economically advanced regions of the world, which have opted to broaden their presence internationally through diverse commercial strategies. The character of the overseas enterprise varies considerably from straightforward international branch campuses to multiple forms of franchising. The motive behind these foreign initiatives varies, and this article seeks to understand the pattern of new university initiatives. It offers a typology to give insight into various university types. The paper examines a series of case studies from three Central Asian states. These are taken to reflect in many ways the phenomena as found globally.
