The article presents a review of the literature on the production of expanded-clay, where wastewater, construction waste, slags, phosphogypsum, the vinyl chloride absorption product by sodium hypochlorite, oil sludge, etc. are used as corrective additives. Loess-like loam was used in the experiments as the main raw material, as well as oil sludge was added as a corrective and modifying additive in the organic mixture. The microstructure of expanded clay samples based on loess-like loam with the addition of an organic mixture of two compositions, namely, loess-like loam-oil sludge, and fine-grained sand-oil sludge was studied. The results of the studies have shown that with the addition of an organic mixture based on two studied compositions of oil sludge, the surface of the produced granules is compacted by an occluded porosity. This fact suggests that the strength of the granules increases, and their water imbibition decreases. Using granules with occluded porosity in concrete as an aggregate will require less water consumption, as well as a binder which will provide the required mobility of the concrete.
