Abstract: Three series of experiments have been conducted to study the possible replacement of quartz sand with opoka in the composition of the initial charge for glass production. The experiments were carried out at atmospheric pressure and a temperature of 900–1200°C. It is shown that the complete replacement of quartz sand by opoka and the use of initial opoka-based compositions in the glass industry will increase the temperature of the technological production scheme and energy consumption and is economically unprofitable. The promising production schemes include those that use broken glass together with opoka in the composition of the initial charge. It is shown that the crystal phases of opoka-bearing samples vanish at a lower temperature than in opoka-free samples.
