Abstract: Features of the structure of bottom communities in small rivers contaminated and uncontaminated with heavy metals in Altai have been studied. A decrease in overall species richness and the number of macroinvertebrate species sensitive to contamination in polluted sites is noted. It is found that, in the impact area, the structural transformations of bottom communities do not depend on the heavy metal composition or watercourse position in the river system. This makes it possible to use the common approach to assessing the ecological state of mountain rivers situated in various regions of Altai and exposed to pollution by various metals. A comparative analysis of different biological indicators is performed, and recommendations to include the Biological Monitoring Working Party (BMWP) and EPT indices into the environmental monitoring system for heavy metal pollution in small mountain rivers in Altai are proposed.
