Background: Assisted reproductive technologies (ART) using donor oocytes are becoming an important tool for couples facing fertility issues. In countries with a multi-ethnic population, such as Kazakhstan, couples preferences regarding donor ethnicity may play a significant role in choosing oocytes. However, studies on ethnic preferences in ART are limited, highlighting the need for further research in this area. The study aimed to analyze the preferences of married couples from different ethnic groups when choosing donor oocytes at the IRM Clinic in Almaty from 2021 to 2023. Methods: A statistical analysis of data from 993 couples who underwent ART programs using donor oocytes was conducted to achieve the objective. The couples preferences were analyzed considering the ethnicity of the spouses and their choice between Asian and European oocytes. Results: The study found that couples with the same ethnicity (Asian couples) chose oocytes corresponding to their ethnic group in 97% of cases. In mixed couples (Asian wife and European husband or vice versa), the choice of oocytes corresponding to the ethnicity of one of the spouses was predominant. In couples with European spouses, 86% chose European oocytes, but 14% preferred Asian ones. Conclusion: The study revealed a significant influence of the spouses ethnicity on the choice of donor oocytes. The results obtained can be useful for improving the practice of counseling in the field of ART and further research on ethnic preferences in reproductive technologies.
