Perinatal hypoxia and asphyxia at birth remain an important problem in modern neonatology. The search for ways to minimize the negative effects of hypoxia and ischemia-reperfusion on the newborn brain has been going on for many years. Of all the strategies for helping these patients, only therapeutic hypothermia has gained general acceptance to date. But it is not a panacea. The possibilities of pharmacological neuroprotection using melatonin, erythropoietin, topiramate, inert gases and many other substances, and remote ischemic postconditioning are being actively investigated. The listed techniques are being studied both in isolation and in combination with therapeutic hypothermia in the hope of obtaining a better, complementary clinical effect. This article contains an overview of the results achieved on laboratory models and the first experience of using some technologies in neonatal practice.
