Methane emission dynamics in mining in zones of geological faults

The increase in gas pressure and in overlying rock pressure in deeper level mining of highly gassy coal seams in mines of the Karaganda Basin elevates hazard of coal and methane outbursts. Furthermore, the frequency and energy of outbursts jump. Outbursts in the Karaganda Basin occur mainly in the zones of geological faults. This study describes dynamics of gas emission as heading fronts approach and intersect the zones of faults in mines of the Coal Department of ArcelorMittal Temirtau. The measures of gas emission are collected in temporary roadways as they intersect geological faults. The scope of the studies embraced temporary roadways in 5 mines in the Basin. The analyses of return ventilation air in the temporary roadways driven in outburst-hazardous coal seams show that methane concentration on approach of a fault is lower than on its intersection in 47% of cases, is higher in 13% of cases and is the same in 40% of cases. Determination of gas emission dynamics during mining in faulted areas of coal seams and the experimental research in the geological conditions of mines in the Karaganda Basin is a topical problem of science and technology as it enables detection of hazards as production faces approach tectonic faults, which promotes effective decision-making on the outburst hazard risk reduction.
