Introduction. In many regions of the world, including Kazakhstan, the problem of abandonment and degradation of agricultural lands is intensifying, leading to significant environmental and socio-economic consequences. Long-term abandonment of arable lands results in overgrowth with shrub and woody vegetation, declining soil fertility, increasing erosion processes, and poses a threat to the country’s food security. At the same time, Kazakhstan lacks an effective system for regular monitoring and assessment of the condition of such lands, which prevents timely measures for their rehabilitation and rational use. The aim of this study is to develop and test a comprehensive methodology for identifying, spatially analyzing, and assessing the quality condition of unused agricultural lands using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) technologies. Object of research. The case study area is the Ayyrtau district of the North Kazakhstan region, characterized by a combination of highly productive chernozem soils and increased erosion risk. Research methodology. Multispectral satellite images from Landsat TM and tools of the ArcGIS Spatial Analyst module were used to classify arable fields according to the degree of overgrowth with shrub and woody vegetation. Additionally, the soil erosion debility coefficient (K-factor) was calculated based on international methodology and a digital elevation model and erosion hazard maps were created. As a result, areas requiring priority soil protection measures were identified. Results. For the first time in the North Kazakhstan region, a comprehensive automated monitoring of degraded lands was conducted, combining data on soil characteristics, terrain slopes, and vegetation cover. The developed methodology allows for prompt identification of unused agricultural lands and assessment of their suitability for rehabilitation and reintegration into agricultural use. Resume. The results are of practical importance for government agencies, the agricultural sector, and land users, and can be applied in regional and national programs for sustainable land management and agricultural development under increasing climatic and anthropogenic pressures.
