This study examined the influence of local cultural materials on the English language communication skills of university students in Kazakhstan. Language instruction not only introduces students to native speakers and their culture, but also highlights aspects of the students ethnic culture. Additionally, this instills universal values that can be used across contexts through comparative and contrastive studies, assisting in learners’ cultural upbringing. The research was aimed at exploring the impact of local culture-based materials on university students’ English communication skills. An experiment was set up, where one (experimental) group of language learners learned English with local cultural materials, while the other (control) group used materials untied to the local context. The research findings indicated that integrating local culture-based materials into teaching English positively contributes to students’ communication skills. The authors conclude that students may benefit if English is taught alongside local content since familiar material makes language learning cognitively more impactful.
