The article provides an assessment of the regional position and clarification of the hydrocarbon potential properties of the Western Kazakhstan basins and the Torgai-Syrdarya tectonic belt, which together represent the most active and dinamic part of the territory of Kazakhstan. The necessity of further improvement of the existing ideas about the structural setting and hydrocarbon potential of these basins from the position of clarifying the specific features of their oil and gas potential and the geochemical environment for the formation of oil and gas accumulations is substantiated. On the basis of this and taking into account temporary crisis phenomena in the economy and the oil and gas industry, more efficient approaches in the the organization of geological exploration work in the most promising areas of the South Torgai, North Torgai and Shu-Sarysu basins are proposed. A joint analysis of the available theoretical concepts and new data will make it possible to clarify the geological history of the basins development, the possibilities and potential hydrocarbon migration pathes, current status of the modern theory, so called “Deep oil origin” and on the basis of this to substantiate the estimated hydrocarbon otntial of Kazakhstan as a whole. Therefore, it is proposed to conduct exploration work in certain areas of this territory, with an objective to understand the differences on subsurface characteristics as well as in the hydrocarbon potential of individual basins. Integrated research works will contribute to further improvement of ideas about the structural setting and hydrocarbon potential of this area, in selction of most efficient approach for the development of the prognosed hydrocarbon potentials as well as in conducting more detailed scientific analyses of the issues related to the nature of specific features of hydrocarbon potential and geochemical settings of the formation of oil and gas deposits.
