The article presents the history of the study of medieval sites in Saryarka. The research history is conventionally divided into several stages. The initial stage covers the period from the early 18th century to the establishment of the Central Kazakhstan Archaeological Expedition and is characterized by the collection of data on sites. The next stage is associated with the research of the Central Kazakhstan Archaeological Expedition under the leadership of A.Kh. Margulan in the region, during which many monuments were discovered, indicating the parallel development of nomadic and sedentary cultures, as well as the organization of their systematic study. The final stage represents the period of modern history. It is marked by the establishment of the “Esil Archaeological Expedition” in 1998 under the leadership of K.A. Akishev and the beginning of archaeological and paleoethnographic research in the region. During this period, large-scale excavations of the Bozok and Bytygay settlements, which were sedentary cultural centers, were carried out in the Saryarka steppe. The research results provide new materials indicating that Saryarka was an important region where sedentary and nomadic cultures developed in parallel and in close interaction.
