To improve the medium-temperature coking of fractionated long-flame Shubarkol coal (Kazakhstan) in vertical furnaces, the influence of the coking characteristics on coke quality is studied. Specifically, the influence of the following factors on the piece size, mechanical strength, and physicochemical properties of the coke is investigated: the coal’s piece size (25–100 and 25–80 mm), the final temperature (750 and 850°C), the heating rate (1.9–9.7°C/min), and the method of coke quenching. Industrial experience in the operation of various vertical furnaces with variation in heating conditions is briefly reviewed. Coking conditions for long-flame Shubarkol coal at the Shubarkol Komir plant are recommended for the production of high-quality carbon reducing agents that may be used in ferroalloy production. Possible applications of medium-temperature coke are considered.
