Pilot industrial tests of the prereduction of chromium raw materials using the Höganäs technology in a tunnel furnace were carried out. A bogie-hearth chamber furnace fired with natural gas was used to simulate the process. Silicon-carbide crucibles were used as process containers. For prereduction, 16 ore–coal mixtures with a total mass of more than 20 tons were tested. They were heat-treated at different temperatures for different times. The results of the pilot industrial tests confirmed the technological capability of prereduction of Kazakhstan chromite by the Höganäs method. The achieved degree of metallization allows effective use of this process compared with sintering or preheating of the charge in terms of minimum power consumption during smelting of ferrochromium in DC furnaces.
