The article focuses on the visual narratives of the past in the Soviet illustrations of the Kazakh heroic epic and modern forms of the imagined past in the graphics and painting of Kazakhstan. The aim of the paper is to determine the principles of representation of the past in Kazakh art, and the embodiment of the concepts of memory, visual history and nostalgia in it. The authors highlight the intention of Soviet graphic artists to convey the actual problems of their time through the representation of the past. Significant for the present research is the study of the nostalgic experience of the past, in its various forms, which provide a powerful impetus for the development of identification strategies.
