Urinary incontinence (UI) is a common problem in women that significantly affects their quality of life. There are two main subtypes of UI: stress and urge, which can occur either alone or in combination. These conditions impair women’s physical, psychological and social well-being. Treatments for UI include both conservative and surgical methods, but their efficacy remains limited. In recent years, the possible link between the urogenital microflora and the development and progression of UI has been the subject of intense research interest. Despite numerous studies, this topic remains poorly understood. This article reviews current data on the characteristics of the urogenital microflora in women with UI, as well as possible mechanisms of its impact on the onset, pathogenesis and severity of the disease. Further study of the microflora will help in the development of new therapeutic approaches to improve the diagnosis and treatment of UI in women.
