On the formation of the Kazakh verb zertte- to examine

This study deals with the etymology of the Kazakh word zertte- to examine, to scrutinize, to evaluate. On the evidence of the Karakalpak verb izertle- to research, it is argued that the verb goes back to East Old Turkic eδär- to pursue, to follow. Alternative analyses of the suffixes are discussed.
