The Karaganda Coal Basin has a complex structure. Geological damage zones, such as faults, washouts, variable hypsometry of seams, etc., impede underground mining operations. At the present time, mine geophysics is widely applied in the world for studying geological structure and solving various geotechnical problems. In the late 20th century, mine geophysics methods came into use in the Karaganda Basin. Such methods include mine seismology and electric exploration. Initially, seismic exploration used the common-depth-point reflection method. However, it yet remains highly relevant to obtain an objective pattern of the geological environment. This problem is connected with the features of excitation of elastic waves in mines (specifics of generated wave field, its propagation patterns, source directivity). The developed and trialed methods of underground seismic exploration involved recording of channel-wave and interface-wave signals, and allowed building a detailed geological-and-geophysical model of certain areas of a mineral deposit. Processing of both types of the waves enhances resolvability of the method, and provides information on coal, host rocks and coal roof. The underground measurement procedure is described, its full-scale trial results are reported, and the seismic and dielectric characteristics are obtained at a high contrast ratio and distinct traceability of damage zones.
