The deficiencies of diamond point drilling bits in drilling in uranium production are analyzed. The causes of durability and efficiency loss are revealed, including bit holdup in drilling. Based on the theoretical research results, two test pointed bits without the disadvantageous features of the pointed pit currently in use are designed. The signature of the test tools is the absence of cutting structure in the periaxial zone of rotation of the tool and the ability of the bit to make a rat hole first and then to reaming it to the standard size by blades. One test blade pointed bit is equipped with tungsten carbide picks for soft rock drilling, the other pointed bit has a compound cutting structure (tungsten carbide picks and polycrystalline diamond cutters PDC) for varied strength rock drilling. Before commercial application of the engineered and patented diamond point drilling bits, it is necessary to implement their full-scale field testing at uranium deposits having different geological characteristics. The primary tests of seven pilot tools show promising prospects.
