Readers are offered the article on the organ cycle F-dur BWV 540. This work is not sufficiently studied in domestic and foreign musicology. There are no special works to rely on in the proposed study. The question of its dating is not well understood. The structure of its parts and questions of spiritual meaning were not subjected to special analysis. The article discusses the first part of the cycle BWV 540 – the toccata F-dur. Its structure is analyzed. A question is raised regarding the possible spiritual meanings inherent in it. The following hypothesis is proposed for consideration: J. S. Bach when creating the toccata F-dur BWV 540 attracted Lutheran chorales as a musical source. The supposed chorale source is the anthem „Allein Gott in der Höh sei Ehr“. This article uses organ compositions created by Bach on this anthem for comparative analysis. The purpose of the analysis is the desire to lift the veil over the spiritual plot of the toccata. A fragment of the text from the Gospel of Mark is considered as a literary thesis for the first part of the toccata. The author of this article makes assumptions about the possible involvement of the toccata in the creation of „Markus-Passion“ BWV 247 which were later lost. As evidence, fragments from the toccata F-dur are given, in which a connection can be traced with the music of the “Christmas Oratorio” BWV 248 and the “Mourning Ode” BWV 198, musical material from which is supposed to have been used by J. S. Bach in the creation of his „Markus-Passion“. The analysis of the first part of the organ cycle F-dur BWV 540 proposed by the author in the article can become a guide for musicians studying in higher educational institutions when analyzing the composer’s creative heritage and comprehending the content of works selected for inclusion in their performing repertoire.
