The article presented to the attention of musicians and teachers, emphasizes compositional features and artistic content of the second part of the organ cycle BWV 538 - the fugue “Dorian”. The author’s version concerning the relationship of the Toccata and fugue d-moll “Dorian” with the chorale “Christ, unser Herr, zum Jordan kam”, with the text of the Gospel of Matthew as a literary source and with the music of the “Matthäus-Passion” BWV 244 by J. S. Bach himself receives justification. The compositional features of the interludes of the “Dorian” fugue are considered in connection with the historical traditions coming from the ancient polyphonic ricercars. The associative artistic images that arise in the thematic sections of the fugue and its interludes correspond to the text of the chorale “Christ, unser Herr” and the text of the libretto of the “Matthäus-Passion”. The study relies on the method of comparative musical and theoretical analysis based on the analytical apparatus of domestic theoretical musicology. The intertextual analysis of the compositional features and the artistic content of the second part of the organ cycle BWV 538 – the Dorian fugue presented in the article testifies to the pedagogical expediency of such a detailed multidimensional analysis to bring both professional musicians and students of higher musical educational institutions closer to understanding the deep foundations of J. S. Bach’s creative heritage
