This article examines historical sources relating to the power struggle that emerged in the Ulus of Ordu following Konichi’s death at the turn of the 13th to 14th centuries. Fourteenth-century Egyptian historians indicate that the contest for leadership between Bayan and Kubluk transpired in Ghazna, although alternative sources place the Orduid territories considerably farther north. Nevertheless, evidence exists to suggest that Jochid possessions in this region date back to at least the 1240 s. Noteworthy developments in 1298—1299 included the demise of Konichi, ruler of the Ulus of Ordu, and the succession of his son Bayan; Chagataid Duva’s complete control over Ghazna and the Nekudarian Horde; Kaidu’s deployment of a sizable force northward to secure the Orduid domains along the Irtysh; and the emergence of Kutuku’s grandson Kubluk as a claimant to the Orduid throne. The author proposes that until this period, Kutuku’s descendants resided in Ghazna, where Kubluk was advanced by Kaidu and Duva as a nominal khan whose primary role was to legitimize their acquisition of the Ulus of Ordu’s principal territory.
