The year 2023 became a landmark for the Margulan Institute of Archaeology. The urgent problems that have accumulated over a long time in the archaeological science of Kazakhstan and in general in the leading scientific institution of the country – Margulan Institute of Archaeology, were voiced by the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan at the National Kurultai in Turkestan. This fact, at a high state level, launched the process of activating the creation of the necessary conditions for the functioning of the Institute, meeting the modern requirements of the organization of such scientific institutions. In 2023, the Margulan Institute of Archaeology became one of the 11 scientific research organizations in Kazakhstan engaged in fundamental scientific research, which became a significant support for a number of research institutes and scientists to obtain stable funding, regardless of the availability of programs and projects. At the same time, in the reporting year, the Institute carried out the implementation of four major programs within the framework of program-targeted financing and 13 projects within the framework of grant financing of the Committee of Science of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Active research was also carried out on regional projects in Western Kazakhstan, which led to the logical opening of the West Kazakhstan branch of the Institute in Aktobe, whose main mission is to coordinate archaeological research, as well as preserve and popularize historical and cultural heritage in the region. In 2023, the Institute traditionally acted as a platform for annual international conferences: the reporting session of archaeologists of Kazakhstan – Margulan readings and the forum for young scientists – Akhinzhanov readings with the publication of collections of reports. Monographs continued to be published as part of the Institute’s serial publications: “Materials and Research on the Archaeology of Kazakhstan”, “Proceedings of the Margulan Institute of Archaeology”; the journal “Kazakhstan Archeology”, as well as biobibliographies and scientific articles. During the reporting period, the geography of archaeological expeditions, international and regional cooperation expanded.
