The image of a modern city is defined by the infrastructure, including water supply, sewerage, transport, energy supply and other benefits of civilization. However, there is a question about how this image corresponds to human nature and to the nature of human society. Decisions on the image of the urban environment should be made by appropriate specialists using theoretical theses connecting the form of organization of the urban landscape with the nature of the social and infrastructural systems that fill this landscape to foresee the social consequences of decisions in the field of the physical and spatial form of building an artificial habitat for people, what is called “urbanism”. Notably, these decisions concern both urban infrastructure systems and systems of human society. When there is a lack of scientifically proven assumptions, a changing consensus of beliefs fills this need, and the image of the city is defined by the opinion of urban experts. However, it can take decades of social costs to change the practice, if the inadequacy of these beliefs is revealed. Thus, the problem of interaction between social theory and the artificial environment for people is a crucial issue from author’s perspective and it is a research problem for this study in terms of potential level of verifiable proposals, at which a person intervenes in the artificial environment. First of all, this is due to the need for “design level” theories that define design in the broad sense of all the choices and decisions made by professionals in the field of artificial environment, when creating and changing the urban environment. Another side of designing urban spaces is materials concerns. Tribology is the study of science and technology of interacting surfaces in relative motion. As any building in constant motion no matter the soil on which it stands. The question of materials properties in tribosystems is pretty significant. The authors examined the contradictions, problems and recommendations, and described the problems that sometimes hinder the processes for cross-cultural and interdisciplinary research in urbanism significantly. It was concluded that without rethinking the role of spatiality in the urban environment, rethinking the interdependence of social spaces and urban development, the impact of existing urban landscapes on the industrial image of the urban environment, and solving other problems discussed in this study, urbanism will continue to be an art rather than a science.
