The article presents the results of a study of chip formation during processing of steel 30HGSA by thermal friction milling. When studying the process of chip formation, a metallographic research method was used. Investigated the zone of the root of the shavings, which is the most stressed zone and the zone of the highest pressure and intense heat generation. Chip samples were also obtained to study the texture. To improve the surface structure of the samples, they were pressed in, polished, and etched by the electrolytic method. In order to have more detailed information about the processes occurring in the zone of chip formation, a diagram of the formation of chips during thermo-friction milling was given. The results of the study showed that in the process of thermo-friction milling, no structural transformations occur, and the material in the contact layers retains the initial phase state and undergoes changes only due to plastic deformation.
