One of the spiritual values frequently addressed in the aqyn aitys is religion. The main purpose of this study is to reveal the religious values in the Kazakh aitys tradition. The research examines the religious theme in aitys art by dividing it into two periods. The first period covers texts of the XIX-XX centuries, while the second period includes aitys on religious themes after Kazakhstan’s independence. Additionally, the study emphasizes the educational value of modern aitys art, particularly concerning the matter of being devout. Furthermore, the study also discusses how religious consciousness and views are transmitted to listeners through aitys. This study has been guided by the scientific and theoretical works of Kazakh scientists as M. Auezov, S. Mukanov, S. Kaskabasov, M. Jarmuhameduly, T. Albek, A. Buldibay, B. Rakym, A. Almanov, K. Asanov, Sh. Adilbayeva, and others in the fields of literary science and folklore research. The sources for this research include manuscripts of the Manuscripts and Rare Books Fund of the Institute of Literature and Arts named ofter M. O. Auezov and the National State Enterprise of the Central Scientific Library “Bilim Ordasy”, specifically those housed in the Rare Books, Manuscripts, and National Literature section. It should be noted, that manuscripts of aitys works by Shozhe and Kempirbay, Bolyk and Yelentay, and Ulbike and Kuderi hoja were utilized. These manuscripts are preferred because they contain the first recordings of these aitys in Arabic script. In order to analyse the nature and value of the development of the religious theme in aitys, aitys works of the XIX-XX. centuries and after the years of independence were taken as research subjects. The study also includes evaluations of the past and present of akyn aitys-competitions. Additionally, religious elements have been identified in epic aitys examples, focusing on those based on Islamic values and presented in a dialogic style, particularly in the “Boztorgay” epic, which centers on Hadrat Ali. This study employs systematic-complex, comparative-historical, and chronological research methods to elucidate and conclude the connections between aqyns and Islam. The research reveals that religious aityses, which were not permitted to be studied during the Soviet period, frequently include references to Quranic verses, hadiths, narratives of saints, Sharia rules, and the pillars of faith. Additionally, it is observed that religious aitys works were recited not only to defeat rival aqyns but also to explain and spread the Islam religion.
