Kazakhstan’s international relations studies began to evolve only towards the end of the last century. Since then, two major factors—foreign policy strategy and post-Soviet academic traditions—have shaped the country’s IR studies. The article explores the evolution of academic international relations in Kazakhstan. How has the academic IR developed in Kazakhstan? What do the emerging IR studies stand for? These questions will be addressed using a contextualized historical comparison of the institutional and intellectual settings of Kazakhstan’s international relations studies. The article first discusses the distinctions within the Soviet School of IR that affect post-Soviet studies. It then examines the institutional origins of Kazakhstan’s IR studies and their structural and intellectual basis. Further, it examines the ongoing developments, obstacles, and prospects in the field. The article concludes by reflecting on Kazakhstan’s potential niche in global IR studies.
