In 2024, five years have passed since the signing of the Agreement on Scientific Cooperation in the Field of Archaeology between the Margulan Institute of Archaeology of the Committee of Science of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan (Almaty, Kazakhstan) and the Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Moscow, Russia). During this period, the collaboration between these scientific organizations has focused on the identification, registration, study, and integration into scientific use of a series of newly stratified Paleolithic sites in the Almaty region. The partnership also included organizing an international conference-field seminar dedicated to issues of the Stone Age and conducting experimental works in the vicinity of the Rakhat site. The Kazakhstan-Russia Joint Paleolithic Expedition has been conducted in close cooperation with the Issyk State Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserve, the Tanbaly State Historical, Cultural, and Natural Museum-Reserve, the Almaty Regional Center for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Heritage, and the Institute for the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The primary research has been carried out at the multilayered stratified site of Rakhat, where 16 cultural layers were identified, dating from 28,000 years ago to 19,400 years ago. This unique site offers opportunities to study the transformation processes of cultures from different stages of the Upper Paleolithic in the context of the global climatic changes of the Last Glacial Maximum. The research findings from the site were presented to the broader scientific community in 2022. In addition to the Rakhat site, investigations in recent years have begun at sites such as Uzynagash 1–3 and Saryzhazyk 1–4.
