The photovoltaic conversion efficiency (PCE) of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has made significant breakthroughs in the past decade. However, perovskite (PVK) is prone to degradation in harsh environmental conditions, such as continuous illumination, high temperature, water, and oxygen, which compromises the photoelectric performance and long-term stability of the devices and severely limits their commercial application. Therefore, this review deeply explores the key role of buffer layers (BLs) in PSCs to solve the above problems. Among buffer layer (BL) materials, the metal oxide (MO) has superior photoelectric properties, low cost, and excellent physical and chemical stability, so this review focuses on analyzing the function and mechanism of different types of MO BL materials in enhancing the stability and photoelectric properties of PSCs at different interfaces. The advantages and disadvantages of different preparation processes for MO BLs and targeted optimization strategies are also proposed. Finally, the existing problems of MO BLs and corresponding strategies as well as application prospects have been introduced. Furthermore, this review provides certain reference opinions for researchers to select the deposition position of different MO BLs and inspires researchers to study the MO materials that have not been used in PSCs.
