Conceptual crossroads: the influence of the Turkist thought on the Kazakh Intellectual Movement (1900–1920)

The ideas of Turkism, Islamism and Islamic modernism have become an important part of the socio-political discourse of the Turkic world and had a significant impact on the formation of the Kazakh educated class. These ideas were reflected in the educational, cultural and organizational activities aimed at the modernization of Kazakh society and the consolidation of national identity. The authors attempted to identify the complex and multifaceted interactions among leading representatives of these movements, with particular attention, to how the ideas of Ziya Gökalp and Ali bey Hüseynzade were perceived and adapted by the Kazakh educated class in the process of forming national consciousness and political strategies in the beginning of the twentieth century. As a result of the study, the following conclusions were drawn: the ideas of Hüseynzade and Gökalp, despite their lack of direct involvement in the Kazakh national intellectual movement, had an indirect influence on the social and political activities of Kazakh intellectuals at both regional and interregional levels. The concept proposed by Hüseynzade and Gökalp became a foundational paradigm for the preservation and renewal of the national code within the Kazakh context. This approach can be characterised as a ‘synthesis of Europeanism and National Traditions’.
