The addition of highly conductive materials, such as carbon nanotubes into SiC matrix can significantly improve the functional (electrical and thermal) properties of porous SiC ceramic. This study investigates the effect of carbon nanotubes (CNT) on the electrical and thermal conductivities of porous SiC ceramics sintered at 2050 °C for 2 h in a nitrogen atmosphere. The porosity of the newly developed porous SiC ceramics increased from 71.2% to 77.5% as CNT content increased from 0 to 10 wt%, respectively. Electrical conductivity of porous SiC ceramics significantly increased from 4.8 × 10-2 to 3.2 × 100 Ω-1·cm-1, representing an enhancement of up to two orders of magnitude. The sharp electrical conductivity increase between 0 and 3 wt% CNT indicates a percolation threshold, where CNTs begin forming continuous conductive networks within the porous SiC matrix. Further increases up to 10 wt% CNT enhanced charge transport through improved interparticle connectivity, with the nitrogen sintering atmosphere potentially contributing additional charge carriers through N-doping effects. In contrast, thermal conductivity of porous SiC ceramics decreased monotonically from 2.755 to 0.724 W/(m·K) as CNT content increased, primarily due to higher porosity and increased phonon scattering at SiC-CNT interfaces.
