The article presents the principles for developing and the potential applications of the multilingual database “Emotions in Metaphorical Representation.” This resource is designed to systematize and conduct cross-linguistic analysis of metaphorical models that represent basic emotional states in four languages: English, Kazakh, German, and Russian. The relevance of the research is driven by the absence of a specialized linguistic database focusing specifically on metaphorical expressions used to conceptualize emotions across different language systems. The study aims to create a database containing examples from English, Kazakh, German, and Russian, and to develop a unified annotation system that enables cross-linguistic comparison of metaphorical models. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the development of the database itself, the principles of classification and annotation, and the selection and interpretation of empirical material. Furthermore, the study attempts to integrate the Kazakh language into cross-linguistic metaphor analysis, helping to partially fill the existing gap in this field. Currently, the database includes 551 analyzed examples containing frequent and conventional metaphorical expressions that represent six basic emotions: anger, fear, sadness, joy, surprise, and disgust. The examples are extracted from corpus sources in the four languages and are accompanied by source information and detailed annotation. Annotation was carried out according to the following parameters: emotional states by clusters, metaphorical models and submodels, semantic roles, and thematic classes of verbs and adjectives. The structure of the database allows for flexible searching of relevant contexts and conducting cross-linguistic comparisons, as demonstrated, for instance, with the submodel “EMOTION IS A LIQUID” and its realization in the four languages. The developed database is highly extensible: its structure allows for the addition of new languages, emotions, and contexts, and it can be easily adapted for various tasks in linguistic research on metaphors.
