The article attempts to analyze social media in the context of reliability and legal protection and considers them as open sources of information where the interests of the authorities and journalists collide. The emergence of digital media has significantly disrupted the existing relations between these institutions. In the context of global communications, the key issues of using open sources are the subject of interdisciplinary research such as journalism, political science, information technology, and law. This article critically examines the relationship between authorities and journalists and analyzes modern media concepts as the basis for the development of journalism. It also provides an overview of interdisciplinary research into the nature of journalists and information sources from social media. The paper is informative in a geographical context, and it also describes a case study of the peculiarities of the work of Kazakh journalists in extreme conditions
