The paper considers the impact of migration to cities upon the cultural diversity of urban societies and its contribution to cultural conflicts. In post-Soviet states, these consequences of migration to cities are most expected in countries of Central Asia and the South Caucasus, as well as in cities in the southern regions of Russia, because a large proportion of migrants to those cities arrive from areas with high traditionalism, or “patriarchy”, in social settings. The study compares views on social roles of women and men among three population groups: those who have grown up in one of the biggest cities of Central Asia, Almaty (Kazakhstan), which has been attracting intensive immigration flows in recent decades; those who migrated to that city as adults; and those who reside in other parts of the country. The Generations and Gender Survey conducted in Kazakhstan in 2018 is the source. Multinomial logistic models are estimated for relevant survey answers, which allow for the comparison of views of the three groups of respondents on the social roles of women and men. The analysis has shown that respondents who have grown up in the city generally tend to have more gender-egalitarian views on this issue. Furthermore, these contrasts are stronger among Muslims than among respondents of other religious affiliations, which does not agree with general expectations about inter-confessional differences in the impact of urbanization on social values.
