The article examines the socio-economic transformations in the Akmola region in terms of the colonization penetration of the Russian Empire into the steppes of Kazakhstan of the last quarter of the 19th century. Based on official sources of information (Reviews of the Akmola region and other similar sources of information), the types and methods of implementing the colonization and modernizing intentions of the tsarist administration are investigated and analyzed, the degree of their success and fundamentality is assessed. Valuable information deposited in the reviews of the Akmola region makes it possible to study the development of the city of Akmola and the adjacent territory in different aspects and the attitude of the authorities both to the development of the region and to the needs of its residents. At the same time, without a certain management experience developed over the long existence of the empire and its colonization practices, it would not have been possible to carry out further major socio-economic transformations in Kazakhstan in the first decades of the 20th century.
