This paper examines the impact of academic mobility the development of students’ ethnocultural identity. Participation in academic mobility programmes provides students with significant opportunities for personal and academic growth including the development of academic, critical thinking, language and professional skills. Moreover, such experiences foster greater tolerance, adaptability and independence, while enhancing intercultural competence and awareness of ethnocultural identity. Drawing on interview data from Kazakhstani students who participated in academic mobility in different countries, the study explores changes in students’ ethnocultural practices, cultural adaptation, and preservation of national traditions and perceptions of cultural identity during their period of stay abroad. The findings indicate that international academic experience contributes to increased cultural awareness, greater tolerance toward other cultures and more conscious understanding of their ethnocultural identity. Overall, the study highlights the role of academic mobility as a significant factor in shaping students’ cultural openness and reinforcing their ethnocultural identity.
