Formation of the National Identity of the Republic of Kazakhstan: Peculiarities and Contradictions

The article analyzes the process of rivalry and competition between Kazakh-stani and Kazakh identities for the status of the national identity of the state. National identity is explored through symbols that are chosen, developed, and offered to the eth-nic, linguistic, and cultural groups of Kazakhstan by the ethnic elites and the state. Re-vealed the complex, competitive nature of the relations of ethnocultural symbolisms offered by various elites. Modern man, in search of his national identity, turns to the ethno-cultural symbol of his society. Kazakhstan is a Eurasian space connecting the West and the East, a meeting place of various religions, cultures and civilizations. Therefore, the state identity policy is aimed at preserving civil peace, interethnic harmony and religious tolerance of different nationalities and faiths. The author comes to the conclusion that both concepts of the nation ‒ civil and ethnocultural ‒ are used in the development of the national idea of Kazakhstan. On the one hand, the state promotes the development of the Kazakh language and culture so that they become the property of not only the Kazakhs, but also the entire multi-ethnic population of Kazakhstan, and thereby develop its titular identity. On the other hand, the state insists on the equality of all citizens of Kazakhstan, regardless of their ethnic, cultural, linguistic, religious, or other affiliation.
