The Sherubay-Nura section is located in the Karaganda Coal Basin, paleogeographically accretionary complexes of Kazakhstania, a Middle Paleozoic terrane that was colliding with Siberia during the Late Devonian. Rich ammonoid faunas have been discovered in this and other outcrops of the region during Soviet-era geological mapping. We present the first field reassessment of the section since the 1980s, elucidating previously unknown deep-water character, gamma-spectrometry response, position of ammonoid limestones in the facies succession, and thermal overprint due to basalt dike intrusions and hydrothermal flushing.
