Although the cost of materials is one of the largest building project expenses at up to 60%, the material management function has not been considered as a major part of sustainable performance improvement in the construction process. Despite a wide body of literature on the topic of the adoption of construction technology, there is still a lack of research on the nature of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and how it can improve Sustainable Construction Materials Management (SCMM) in developing economies. This study fills this void by examining the role of BIM in SCMM by identifying the key drivers, barriers and implementation strategies. A literature review and professional input resulted in the identification of 72 critical factors, which were evaluated based on three hundred and three survey responses obtained from industry professionals in developing economies. Using Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM), it is found that resistance to change and dependency on legacy system are barriers to SCMM adoption, while real-time resource monitoring and BIM integrated workflows are found to improve decision-making and sustainability. These insights provide actionable recommendations for policy makers and practitioners to improve the adoption and efficiency of SCMM.
