This paper reports the “Enhancing scientific and professional language learning for engineering students in Kazakhstan through Digital Technologies” project conducted at Kazakhstan’s Saginov Technical University (STU) and funded by the Science Committee of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan (Grant No. AP19678460). The formation of scientific competencies aimed at solving professional tasks and interdisciplinary problems in the context of a new digital reality has become a priority in the training of specialists within Kazakhstan’s higher technical education system. However, a growing contradiction has emerged between the quality of engineering specialists’ training and the evolving requirements of employers in the era of research transformation. To address this challenge the authors of the article aim to develop future technical specialists with expertise in research methods, research writing, and the presentation of research findings as well as engineers who demonstrate critical thinking in interpreting data, conducting experiments, and making informed judgments while considering social, ethical, and scientific factors. As part of this effort, the authors present research findings based on a mass survey analysis designed to assess students’ satisfaction with research work at technical universities. This stage of the study is crucial for identifying gaps in scientific language proficiency that may hinder the research success of future engineers. Since the acquisition of scientific knowledge relies on language, strengthening research-related language skills is essential for the development of effective research competencies.
