One of the most important environmental problems of the city of Almaty is air pollution. Increased and uncontrolled emissions from transportation, thermoelectric power plants, and industrial facilities are the sources of air pollution. Based on actual emissions in 2017 and forecast calculations for 2020-2025 the target indicators for gross emissions from motor vehicles have been determined. The city council has approved a program “Target indicators of the environmental quality of Almaty city until 2025”. Studies related to the achievement of target indicators in Almaty city have been carried out for 2020. The authors have calculated air pollutant emissions according to the methods developed in the EMEP/EEA (CORINAIR) inventory guidebook which provides guidance on estimating emissions by taking into account the factors such as structure and condition of the fleet of vehicles, road and weather conditions in Almaty city. It was found that the current state of technical inspection of the vehicle’s exhaust systems is unsatisfactory. To improve inspection efficiency, it is proposed to introduce two regime checks. Based on the conducted studies, certain regulatory policies have also been proposed. Increasing the ecological level of vehicles, driving restrictions in the city, and tightening control of vehicle emissions can significantly reduce air pollution in the city of Almaty.
