The criteria affecting the choice of underground mining methods (UMMs) are interdependent and the causal relationship among them is intricate. This can cause various risks and can be a significant challenge in mines. Therefore, measuring and assessing the level of a causal relationship between these effective criteria aids in the choosing of the most financially advantageous mining technique prior to commencing the mining operation. Additionally, it can help in designing a more secure/safe mine, and lowering the hazards involved. In this study, a hybrid model according to the fuzzy decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) technique and Z-numbers theory (Z-NT) was proposed to investigate the causal interaction among the influential factors in the instability of underground excavations and choosing the best and safest UMM. Generally, conducting this research will show the cause groups and the effect groups of the criteria. Hence, it will help the decision-makers in identifying the influencing criteria and resolving the project’s problems. Also, the use of the Z-NT makes it possible to highly reduce the uncertainties associated with these effective factors and the expert’s opinions. To do this study, first, the criteria that affect the underground mining method selection (UMMS) were recognized and classified. Then, the proposed hybrid model was used and the causal diagram was constructed. As a result, by applying the proposed model, the cause criteria and the effect criteria were determined. In addition, the significance of every criterion was calculated.
