This study addresses the growing relevance of learned helplessness in the face of global socio-cultural changes that demand independence, responsibility, and competence. Many individuals today feel powerless when confronted with life’s challenges, a phenomenon observed across various life spheres. The study explores the concept of “learned helplessness syndrome”, its psychological roots, how it extends from individuals to communities, and proposes measures for its prevention. Through analysis of diverse scientific sources and application of methods like synthesis, logical and comparative analysis, the study identifies key features, causes, and types of the syndrome. It also examines how helplessness transitions from personal experience to a broader societal issue. With research ongoing for nearly 50 years, particularly in Ukraine and the U.S., this work contributes to a deeper understanding of the syndrome. It holds practical value for scholars and educators seeking to further study and address learned helplessness in both academic and real-world contexts.
