Organic mixed ionic–electronic conductors (OMIECs) are a versatile class of materials whose conductivity can be reversibly modulated through ion exchange with an interfacing electrolyte. This unique property underpins their use in ironic-to-electronic transducers, most notably in organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs). Although OECTs are inherently three-terminal devices, their output characteristics exhibit rectification-like asymmetry, suggesting potential use as rectifiers. However, their intrinsic three-terminal architecture limits practical application in this role. Here, we report the design and characterization of a novel organic electrochemical diode (OECD), which represents a true two-terminal configuration closely resembling the OECT structure. The device comprises an OMIEC channel bridging an anode and cathode, with the anode isolated from the electrolyte by a dielectric layer while the cathode remains exposed. This architecture yields clear diode-like current–voltage (I–V) characteristics, with rectification arising from suppression of leakage currents and controlled ion exchange between the channel and the electrolyte. The cathode plays a dual role, simultaneously functioning as the electronic source and as an ionic gate. Our results establish the fundamental mechanisms governing rectification in OECDs and provide a pathway toward simplified organic electrochemical devices for bioelectronics and neuromorphic applications.
