The article examines the epigraphic monuments of the period of the Ulus of Jochi with an emphasis on the problems of interpreting the epitaph of Huseyn-bek, a significant historical figure whose mausoleum is located at the Muslim cemetery “Aq Zirat” in the Volga–Ural region. The mausoleum, erected in the 14th century, is decorated with inscriptions in both Arabic and Turkic, written in thulth calligraphical script. Due to the partial deterioration of the tombstone and the complexity of the languages used, researchers have encountered difficulties in fully deciphering the epitaph, which makes this monument an intriguing subject of study. The purpose of the study is to provide a more specific interpretation of the epitaph by solving the difficulties of decryption the epitaph and comparing it with similar inscriptions from the Golden Horde period. The research materials include the original tombstone monument, its copy from 1911, historical documents and publications by scholars such as S.M. Prokudin-Gorsky, G.V. Yusupov and A.M. Gainutdinov. Modern epigraphic methods are employed, including a detailed comparative analysis of inscriptions and linguistic features, supported by historical contextualization. The results show a revised decryption of the epitaph, emphasizing the role of Huseyn-bek as a political leader and representative of the Yasawi Sufi tradition, which played a crucial role in spreading Islam in the region. By filling in the gaps left by previous publications, this study contributes to a broader understanding of the cultural and spiritual heritage of the Ulus of Jochi. The obtained results emphasize the importance of continuing research on epigraphic monuments for the preservation and understanding of the historical heritage of this epoch.
