The transformation of modern industry presents special technological challenges to higher education. Graduates of engineering programs must be prepared to quickly adapt to these challenges, foresee future changes in technological processes, and identify the directions in which these processes will evolve. This study aims to develop a practice-oriented engineering training model in Kazakhstan to supply the digital economy with professionals with required competencies. The analysis of the main world economy trends allowed us to determine the nature and direction of modern engineering practice over time. This empirical study is based on primary data collected in 2023 from an online survey of 374 industry representatives in the Republic of Kazakhstan. The findings revealed the level of competencies of engineering graduates. The reliability of the study was assessed using Cronbachs alpha coefficient, which amounted to 0.87, indicating high reliability. The results of the study indicate that the professional competencies of graduates in their first year of employment are estimated at an average of 3.9 points on a Likert scale, with only 32% of graduates possessing priority competencies at a good level, such as “active participation in innovative activities” and “initiative in improving the organization of production”. Universal competencies are evaluated by employers at an average of 4.03 points. The results showed that 14 competencies of the future will be relevant for Kazakhstani enterprises transitioning to the fifth technological mode. The study suggests adopting a new management approach in higher education to train engineers not only to meet labour market demands but also to consider the initial proficiency level of applicants.
