The research aims to estimate the general rules and patterns governing how the engine’s oil level affects the evolution of oil ageing processes and modifications to the diesel engine’s technical state. The experimental estimation of the character of the change of parameters of motor oil in the operation of the automobile engine was carried out. As a consequence, the results illustrating the nature of dependence of various parameters characterising the performance of a forced, automobile, diesel engine on the amount of oil refilling have been obtained. Besides, the description of the operating principle of the oil level regulator in the engine crankcase has been obtained, and its constructive scheme has been presented. The obtained results show the necessity of revision of actually accepted frequency of oil topping up in the crankcase of an automobile diesel engine, at which topping up is carried out every 2000 km of mileage. Practical significance of the results lies in the possibility of their use in the maintenance of motor transport equipment in the case of the need to perform an overhaul or boost diesel engines with a change in the volume of oil in the lubrication system.
