Calligonum aphyllum extract as sustainable colorant for fabric treatment

This article indicates the application of Calligonum aphyllum extract as a sustainable dyestuff for cotton fabrics. The purpose of this study was to investigate the technologies of finishing textile materials with plant extracts obtained from plants growing in the southern regions of Kazakhstan. The study of the Calligonum aphyllum plant in Southern Kazakhstan for textile dyeing is a new and relevant field. The method of obtaining the extract with the addition of mordant and without mordant, the sequence of dyeing was studied. The leaves, stems, and root of Calligonum aphyllum were used for the extraction process. As the samples, three types of fabric were selected. The physical and mechanical properties, fabric surface structure using a scanning electron microscope, and dry and wet rubbing fastness properties were investigated. As a result, by dyeing fabrics with the addition of mordant (alum), there was an improvement in color fastness and saturation by 25–30%, which made the fabric more resistant to external influences. Rational use of natural dyes might cause to obtain eco-material and protects the environment from harmful substances.
